Meet Bert

I am a lifelong Vermonter, paddlesports enthusiast and lover of the outdoors. I got the nickname "Bert" in High School when my friends shortened my last name − and it stuck!

I first got hooked on paddling when I was a Boy Scout and feathered my first paddle. My first kayaking experience was an overnight campout on the Lamoille River where my dad, brother and I tested out 10’ canvas covered kayaks that we built in the basement. That incredible adventure was the beginning of my love for paddling.

I started racing in high school − and I was hooked. In college, I competed in my first American Canoe Association (ACA) Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver National Championship. Since that first nationals I have medalled a dozen times and won my first national title in 1999. I have always loved the camaraderie and fun of paddling and began running the Champlain Valley Canoe and Kayak Series 15 years ago. The CVCKS is a weekly fun race series that many local paddlers - including National Champions and former Olympians - make a part of their summer.

Safety and paddling technique is important to me and I am an ACA certified instructor and can teach you everything from reading the river to how to roll in a kayak. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my love for paddling with you.

Paddling is good for your core − it feeds for your soul and body.
